Business and Management, Lecture

Michael Sellers
Chief Alchemist, Online Alchemy, Inc.
Many people in the games industry dream of having their own studio but don't have an accurate understanding of the skills and knowledge needed, or the risks and benefits involved. This presentation will examine the life cycle of game development startups from inception through product development to final exit. Issues covered include the importance of balanced team composition, creative vision, technical competence, original and licensed intellectual property, sources of funding, balancing risks, the question of whether to go big or stay small, and the various exit paths available. Examples will be drawn from experience in the trenches of current and past game startups.

Those attending this presentation will gain an understanding of the necessary elements of any successful game development startup, and will be aware of the pitfalls and risks as well as the potential benefits inherent in starting their own company. The importance of team composition, culture, and clear vision will be emphasized, as will the necessity of understanding investor relations, intellectual property, and exit strategies.

This presentation is intended for anyone who has contemplated starting their own game development studio. The material presented will be relevant to technical, creative, production, and business people interested in this area. Some knowledge of game development is assumed, but a background in business is not necessary.
