Business and Management, Lecture

Faye Sieracki
Director, Media Forensics Ltd

Tim Christian
Director, Media Forensics
You've done the easy part - created the concept, sold the idea, negotiated the deal, developed/signed the product, delivered the master. Now all you need to do is sit back and wait for the royalties to roll in - right? Wrong! Now you need to keep a very watchful eye on the royalty statements you receive, because more often than not they contain errors and irregularities.^/BR^^/BR^ Royalty accounting is a complex area and the scope for errors is huge. This lecture will show you how to understand and check a typical royalty statement. The lecture content draws on Media Forensics' actual case studies and shows what to look for in a royalty report, how to track the performance of your title, where the typical inconsistencies occur, and how to best to approach your publisher to correct any errors.

The attendee takes away a greater appreciation and understanding of the royalty contract and accounting process and its pitfalls. The attendee benefits from the practical experience of real life audits by becoming able to spot errors and inconsistencies in their own royalty statements. The session also features questions and answers from the audience, giving rise to a lively exchange of views. Ultimately, the developer attendee can turn this session into more timely or additional royalties or, in the case of a publisher, develop strategies to improve contract/statement interpretation and accuracy.

The typical attendee is a CEO, COO, CFO or legal affairs executive within a development organization or personnel responsible for royalty accounting within publishing organizations. Additionally, lawyers and agents would also benefit from listening to the issues raised and bearing them in mind when negotiating contracts.
