For decades, virtual reality (VR) research has required very high-tech delivery platforms. The performance of next-gen games platforms now makes it possible to exploit many of the findings of VR research. With a focus on VR audio, this lecture will review the bioacoustics and perception of auditory space and our ability to listen effectively in complex soundscapes. We'll also consider how effective 3D audio generates the sense of presence in VR, how interaction or doing there takes that sense to the next level, and the implications of these findings for compelling engagement of the players in a game.
