Description: This session will focus on the emotional goals, system design, content creation and overall challenges of Red Faction: Armageddon's destruction gameplay through the lens of sound design. The scope of GeoMod 2.0's destruction mechanic is unrivaled by any other game and represents an extreme and unique perspective for the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of physics-driven audio systems.
Takeaway: Attendees should understand the complimentary relationships between emotion, sound perception, and implementation of GeoMod 2.0's destruction audio. Creating a satisfying experience relies heavily on the articulation of a destruction event through both a culling and dynamic mixing system. The basis for these systems is rooted in how the mind interprets many events that occur simultaneously. This should be ample knowledge to create an effective collision system with less assets, fewer physics hooks, and smaller scope.
Intended Audience: This lecture will appeal to broad levels of experience across audio design, gameplay design, physics and audio programmers. Attendees should have a basic working knowledge of streaming and RAM allocation to understand technical concepts. Physics will be discussed, but mostly from the perspective of player experience. Audio design concepts such as priority, Wwise containers, and dynamic mixing will be introduced briefly. The use of video and Wwise project screenshots should adequately illustrate complex topics to those with basic game development background.
