The Art and Rendering of Remember Me
Laurent Harduin | Lighting Artist, DONTNOD Entertainment
S Lagarde | Senior 3D/Engine Programmer, DONTNOD Entertainment

Location: Congress Saal 2
Date: Tuesday, August 20
Time: 16:00-17:00
Tracks: Programming, Visual Arts
Format: Session
Vault Recording: Video

This session will discuss the challenges, as well as the techniques used, in the game Remember Me to get the plausible sci-fi city of Paris. We will see the beginnings of the process: from concept and inspiration, how we fit our vision to our constraints, how the collaboration between art and technique allowed us to get a stylized, physically-based rendering. The technical side will detail our physically-based rendering workflow with tools and our physically-based rendering of wet surfaces. It will also show our dynamic reflection techniques and how we enhanced the image with simple rendering tricks.

Takeaway
Attendees will learn how the artistic direction can be more efficient and more creative when working under constraints. They will learn the workflow to build around a physically-based rendering pipeline (engine, tools, outsourcing). They also will learn new dynamic reflections techniques and image enhancement techniques.

Intended Audience
The presentation includes both programming and visual arts content. It targets artists, technical artists and graphics programmers.

Speakers
S Lagarde | Senior 3D/Engine Programmer, DONTNOD Entertainment
Sebastien is a graduate software engineer who has worked in the game industry since 2003 as an engine programmer with expertise in rendering. He has worked on many consoles (NDS, GC, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360) for a lot of different titles, from small casual games to AAA games. He also developed the kernel of the Trioviz SDK, a stereoscopic system used in many AAA games (Batman: Arkham City and Arkham Asylum, Assassin's Creed II, Gears of War 3, etc.). Sebastien has worked for Neko Entertainment, Darkworks, and Trioviz. His current company is DONTNOD Entertainment.

Laurent Harduin | Lighting Artist, DONTNOD Entertainment
Laurent has been working as a lighting and rendering artist since 2008, after graduating from the computer graphics university Supinfocom. He worked on offline CG projects (advertising, TV idents and music videos) in Parisian studios such as Sabotage Sutdio, Mac Guff Ligne and Digital District. After publishing a small indie puzzle game for iOS, he moved to DONTNOD Entertainment and worked on the real-time lighting and rendering of Remember Me.
