Game Design, Lecture

Game Designer, Red Storm Entertainment
Military-themed shooters are a large part of today’s games market, as more “tactical realistic” titles crowd the marketplace. With a setting based in a world of jargon and details, there are many pitfalls and challenges to designing in the realm of military shooters. In addition, with the oncoming of the next generation of consoles, the push is often for more: bigger battlefields, more action, and more players. But can the essence of your game get lost in what makes it next gen? This session will present techniques available to Designers to make sure that their game stands out from the crowd by presenting a unified game world, with a correct level of detail in the military genre. Focus is on the design, research and resources needed for a designer to overcome the production, communication, and design challenges faced when working on next gen consoles.

With a setting based in a world of jargon and details, there are many pitfalls and challenges to designing in the realm of military shooters. In addition, with the oncoming of the next-generation of consoles, the push is for more: bigger battlefields, more action, and more players. But can the essence of your game get lost in what makes it “Next Gen?” As the competition in the military genre increases, more detailed and accurate games will stand ahead of their rivals. This session builds on my talk from last year’s GDC, introducing elements that Designers can use to avoid the common problems in military games, focusing on shooters on the next-generation of consoles.

This session is aimed at game designers working on or aspiring to work on military-themed games, particularly in the tactical shooter genre. Writers, marketing professionals, and military consultants will also benefit.
