This session will explain how Blackrock Studio's audio team designed dynamic and responsive engine sounds for the off-road tricks racer, Pure. The nature of off-road racing games draws attention to the interaction between the vehicle and the terrain which is traversing. The design includes ways to make the game's engines react to surface properties and undulations in order to provide feedback to the player. It will be shown how selectively detaching from the game physics can improve the engine behaviour whilst not loosing responsiveness to player input. The concept of engine states such as uphill, in-air and skidding and how they can improve the engine's dynamics will be discussed. The use of real-time DSP to further enhance the dynamics of the engine sound will also be included.
