Last year's session set the foundation that this gap between developers and children can be lessened by learning about children's developmental needs through research, usability studies, and focus groups. But this testing is expensive, difficult to design, and time-consuming. Plus, short attention spans, bad moods, and little hands are just a few of the many challenges one faces when attempting research with children. Let's face it, while we all might know that it's important to test our games, we still would appreciate a little help along the way. Luckily, the world is full of interesting people and studies that will help game developers hit the ground running, even without extensive testing. This year's session will focus on uncovering the relevant existing research from a variety of academic fields, including child development, human computer interaction, television, and market research, to inform all aspects of game design, from designing content that is appropriately challenging to usability and interface design. In addition, the session will include a brief overview of child development theories that every developer should know. In this way, developers will learn about the research findings and resources that will help them create innovative and usable children's games, regardless of the amount of testing their projects have planned. The developers who already do testing will potentially save time and money by avoiding research that reinvents the wheel, while developers who cannot afford to perform testing can get a boost by standing on the shoulders of giants who are already performing the research.
