Legal Issues Affecting The Creation And Implementation Of DRM Systems Speakers: Gabriel Ramsey Track: Business and Management Format: Lecture Experience Level: All Description: Since the late 1990s, a significant body of law concerning DRM systems has evolved. First, these developments affect how much protection a given DRM solution affords. The course provides an overview of the law concerning "anticircumvention" of "copy" controls and "access" controls. These and other principles define, in part, the strength of any DRM system. Understanding this interplay between law and technology will assist those developing or selecting DRM systems to make sound choices regarding protection of their IP. Second, implementing DRM systems can itself pose legal risk. Recently, disputes have resulted from the effect DRM systems have on user hardware and from public statements made by content owners about their DRM systems. The course explores strategies for managing these risks. Idea Takeaway: Business and technical staff evaluating or implementing DRM need to understand not just technical aspects, but what the relevant law is as well. Attendees take away ideas regarding how to select effective systems (in the eyes of the law) and how to avoid legal risks associated with implementation. Intended Audience: This course is intended for anyone in a business or technical role tasked with selecting, implementing or managing DRM systems. |
