As games move into the next generation, there is potential for game audio like never before. Gamers are more sophisticated, and no longer accept generic products. Sound designers can't rely only on stock in-the-can sound effects libraries. It’s time to take a cue from the film world, and record as many custom sounds as possible for each project.^/BR^^/BR^ This presentation explains the basics of field recording. Topics include: what equipment is needed; how to find unique sources to record; how to set up and manage a complex recording session; and how to execute a successful field recording session. Attendees hear stories and audio examples from past field recording experiences.

This session focuses on recording custom sound effects for games. Attendees learn why field recording is important to their projects. They also learn field recording equipment basics, how to set up and manage complex sessions, how to prepare for a session, and how to get the best recordings while in the field. They also get tips on how to convince their producers that custom sfx recording is important to their project.

Sound designers and sound engineers of all levels will benefit from this session. In addition, producers, designers, and anyone will an interest in how to advance game audio is encouraged to attend. Basic familiarity in sound recording is suggested.
