Creating a Global MMO: Balancing Cultures and Platforms in Final Fantasy XI,

Production, Lecture

Sage Sundi
, Square Enix
Available on Windows, PS2 and Xbox 360, FINAL FANTASY XI (FFXI) is the only cross-platform, MMO role-playing game in the industry that links players in North America, Europe, and Japan on the same international servers. Using FFXI as an example, this session explores critical development and service strategies with developers and publishers seeking global expansion of their online services. We not only discuss the difficulties Square Enix has encountered and overcome, but also touch on the resulting advantages of operating a cross-platform large-scale MMO title for three years in the volatile online game market. Other topics covered are: Square Enix’s business strategy regarding cross-platform and polymorphic content deployment; PlayOnlineTM and FFXI server structure and features; cross-cultural community management; and global user support systems.^/BR^^/BR^ This session replaces a session originally planned to be presented by Square Enix president, Yoichi Wada.
