Building the Indie MEGABOOTH: Showcasing Indies Above the Noise
Kelly Wallick | Overlord, Indie MEGABOOTH

Location: Congress Saal 3
Date: Tuesday, August 20
Time: 11:00-11:25
Track: Independent Games Summit
Format: Session
Vault Recording: Video

Over a year ago, 16 indie studios pooled their resources to compete for gamers' attention against the massive AAA studios at PAX East. The result was the Indie MEGABOOTH - a collective of indie developers working within a conference to create a unified presence, out buy the big guys and look good doing it. This talk describes the behind-the-scenes process of executing on that initial event, how we topped that with 30 indie companies for PAX Prime and over 50 for PAX East 2013, our plans for expansion, and why we think this event is leveling the playing field for indie games among press, publishers and gamers.

Takeaway
Attendees will be able to apply the information we learned from our experiences in building a community and a brand, and expanding that into a larger sustainable event. They'll gain a unique perspective on trends in indie games (and its role in the greater games industry) from a large volume of companies and their evolving relationship with publishers, press and fans.

Intended Audience
The intended audience includes game developers (with a focus on independent developers), publishers, community builders and those interested in marketing independent games. This talk will discuss trends in subcultures of the games industry, but prior knowledge is not necessary.

Speaker
Kelly Wallick | Overlord, Indie MEGABOOTH
Kelly Wallick has worked in nanotechnology, biochemistry, biofuels, materials science and as an MIT researcher. In 2011, she decided to make a switch into the games industry and took a project management position at Boston-based Infrared5. During this time she co-founded the Indie MEGABOOTH and has recently transitioned into running the effort full time. Kelly is an active member of the Boston indie developer community and has organized the PAX Indie MEGABOOTH since its conception at PAX East 2012.
