Visual Arts, Lecture

Judd Simantov
Lead Character Technical Director, Naughty Dog Inc
This presentation teaches and explains not only how the API is used, but also how to write stable, clean tools that can easily be extended later. ^/BR^^/BR^By the end of the presentation, character TDs will have extended both their technical knowledge and Maya's rigging capabilities. More advanced areas of MEL (Maya’s scripting language) will also be covered, such as script jobs and calling external windows programs from within Maya.

Attendees leave the session with the knowledge to take their tools to the next level. The session better prepares them to handle the design aspect of big or complex tools. Attendees leave knowing more about writing code that’s easy to read and easy to come back to; preventing using code multiple times, making code reusable and portable; making the most of Maya's existing tools (such as MEL UI's, API function calls, and MEL commands); writing clean and functional interfaces; learning to write tools that are open-ended; and integrating tools into a production pipeline.

Intermediate to advanced users. Character TD's that intend on taking their tool writing to the next level. TD's that have delved into MEL and would like to improve on that knowledge. TD's that know MEL and would like to make the jump into the Maya API. TD's that are familiar with the basics of the API and would like to improve on that knowledge and implement more complex tools such as deformers, custom manipulators, contexts...etc.
