A Perfect Storm - Managing Community Through Sea Change
Linda Carlson | Director, Global Community Relations, SOE

Location: Congress Saal 2
Date: Monday, August 19
Time: 9:30-10:30
Tracks: Business, Marketing & Management
Format: Session
Vault Recording: Video

We have enjoyed some spectacular voyages with our titles at Sony Online Entertainment, and we've weathered more than a few storms over almost 15 years. We've launched more than a dozen different MMOGs. Some continue to sail on magnificently, others have gone to the deeps, and more have been heavily retrofitted to face modern challenges. Change is hard, and we've made a great many changes over the years. In this open and honest session, we'll use case studies to examine how SOE has managed change in the past, how we have changed over time, how the player community has reacted to different issues over the years, and we'll offer our wins and scars for examination.

Takeaway
Managing significant change offers massive challenges to community relations. Review actual, historical events in SOE player history and how the company managed the player base, resulting in good or spectacularly bad effects. Learn how this shaped our own internal changes in our approach to player communication over the past 15 years.

Intended Audience
This example-driven lecture is designed to be both entertaining and illustrative of effective game company communication strategies that can assist anyone on the business side of gaming, including community managers, PR and brand personnel, as well as developers and executives who are actively involved in or influence player communications. Sink or swim people!

Speaker
Linda Carlson | Director, Global Community Relations, SOE
Linda Carlson is the director of global community relations for Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). She is equally (or perhaps even better) known as her alter-ego "Brasse," a garrulous, beer-swigging, bearded female Dwarf. In either form, she has been a fixture in MMOGs since she first logged into EverQuest in March of 1999. Fourteen years down the line, Linda dwells at SOE, managing SOE's community team across a broad portfolio of widely varied titles. Linda believes that MMOGs are more than just products; they deliver meaningful, lasting social experiences, and her gaming future is filled with player collaboration.
