Description
Many are familiar with the U.S. Army & Marine's use of games for squad and platoon based infantry training and multiple defense forces use of Bohemia Interactive's VBS system-- there are several projects around the globe that are modifying off-the-shelf games for use in military training efforts. French forces, for example, use a modification of Ghost Recon. In this talk, Captain Jeremy MacDonald, an Armoured Reconnaissance Officer with the Canadian Forces will detail his efforts leading a small team of developers to create cutting-edge game simulations for training using a variety of game engines. One mod of SWAT 4, Canadian Forces: Direct Action, was created to train Canadian Army soldiers in urban operations but also features efforts on training the use of force, sniper target selection, planning, and joint operations. The work has been successful enough to attract attention from a variety of domestic and international security forces, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Department of Homeland Security's, the US Coast Guard and others. During this session Captain MacDonald will present case studies about each project and discuss the techniques he's used to produce these efforts with a fractional staff and budget.
