Description
This session focuses on strategies for character rigging in a large production setting. It offers an in-depth look at the architecture of the Modular Procedural Rigging system developed at Bungie. These techniques allow riggers to quickly iterate on character development while neighboring departments continue to work at full speed. The first part of the talks focuses on the production environment at Bungie and the unique constraints of developing rigs for a large ongoing franchise with both extensive gameplay animation and a large cinematics team including outsourcers and contractors. The problems that this environment poses for character rigging are substantial -- not only are there many assets to manage, different departments are driving towards different schedules, so tasks crop up in unpredictable order and on short deadline. Simple assembly line methods that assume a linear sequence from modeling to rigging to animation can't cope with the rigors of this environment. The second part of the talk outlines the solution we've evolved at Bungie. The Modular Procedural Rigging toolkit is a set of inter-related Maya scripts and tools designed to tackle the needs of constant refactoring, continually evolving gameplay, and huge numbers of animation. We'll discuss our strategy for keeping track of rig versions and components using an in-scene node network that let's our scripts operate on very different characters and tasks with minimal handholding. We'll show how the same technology drives the creation of new rigs, managing and updating existing rigs, and even facial animation and motion retargeting.
