Session Description
British Academy Award winning composer, Troels Folmann, walks the thin gray line between sound design and music.

This lecture provides the audience will applicable techniques in musical sound design, which is one of the emerging trends shaping the future of scoring. The session provides the audience with applicable knowledge on the following branches of musical sound design:

1. Definition of musical sound design

2. Methodologies in creation of musical sound design, including:

2.1 Orchestral sound design (ex. creating new type of orchestral instruments/FX and reintegrating back to traditional orchestral scores. This part involves techniques used by composer Thomas Newman and his staff, which is focused on creating ambiences out of orchestral scores and reintegrating back into the orchestral mix.)

2.2 Percussive sound design (ex. creating new type of percussion by using unconventional sources like a metal bridge, mouse buttons, teeth clacks, styrofoam, stairwell or sound designing existing percussion).

2.3 Vocal sound design (ex. creating choirs, pads and ambiences from solo voices and reintegrating back to solo voice score.

2.4 Ambient/textural sound design (ex. how to create unique, memorable, musical ambiences out of untraditional source material such as fluroscent lights.

2.5 Glitch based sound design (ex. how tiny atomic fragments of sounds can be manipulated into a musical context - both rhythmically and tonally).

3. Custom recording/sampling. An integrated part of musical sound design involves custom recording and sampling. This part of the session covers techniques on how members of the audience can plan/sample/edit/program their own sounds and integrate it back into their main score.

Intended Audience
The audience will be given applicable knowledge in how to create their own musical sound design, textures and ambiences. There are no direct prerequisites for the session, however the audience is expected to have basic knowledge about composition and creation/design of sounds.
