An expert panel of online game designers from products that run the gamut from only persistent spaces (Ultima Online) to only instantiated spaces (Guild Wars) will present and debate the pros and cons of these two very different approaches to designing for the online game medium.
Persistent spaces offer an open play space in which players can interact spontaneously with the entire player base of that game, but fail to provide the much needed guidance that help players understand how to succeed and grow within that game. Instantiated spaces offer a more directed/guided experience for players, but require much more work to create and can potentially isolate players from opportunities to discover new friends within the player base.
More and more massively multiplayer games are incorporating instantiated spaces into their design. Learn from the experts about this exciting new trend, and challenge, in online game design.

Attendees come away from the lecture with an understanding of the differences between persistent and instantiated spaces in online games. They better understand the relative merits of each and the relative difficulty of implementing both of them.
