Description
The 2008 U.S. Elections were the largest most expensive elections in the history of campaigns. While 2004 saw the birth of internet media by 2008 the use of new media for advancing political messaging, organizing, outreach, and GOTV had achieved incredible levels. Yet, for all the advancement of video, social networking, online tax calculators, banner ads, mobile texting, internet donation campaigns, and more games were incredibly absent from the campaign save a few stories about banner ads inside Xbox 360 titles. Why were games so absent from the political media mix? What could be done to change this? What does this tell us about the state of games and serious games in general? While there are distinct social issue questions that can be explored there are also very distinct business issues as well. In 2008, the web site Politico reported that the Center for Responsive Politics estimated that total political spending on campaigns was $5.8 billion. If game developers had captured even 1/10 of a single percentage point of that spending it would have resulted in nearly $6M in total development spending. In 2012 total spending on political campaigns will likely be around $7 billion. This panel comprised of game developers who have experience building political games and with u.s. political campaigns will provide the audience with more details on the state of games in campaigns/politics and political media, and how the business environment could be improved in favor of games providing a new outlet for commercial development within the serious games field.
